October 25 - December 28, 2024“The Water Spirit Will Take Us Home”
The Story of Igbo Landing
The Tubman Museum and the Lane Center for Social and Racial Equity Wesleyan College partner to celebrate the story of Igbo Landing
In 1803 a group of Igbo captives from Nigeria revolted while being transported on a slave ship in Dunbar Creek, St. Simons Island, Georgia. Three sailors were killed. At least ten of the Igbo drowned in the creek rather than accepting the alternative of enslavement. The Gullah Geechee descendants of enslaved West Africans kept this story of resistance alive through oral tradition. This exhibition celebrates the story of Igbo Landing, how it survived and evolved over time, and how it continues to resonate in African and African American art and culture today.
