Freedom Seekers
Runaway Slave Advertisements in the Macon Telegraph, 1826 – 1865
Between 1826 and 1865, nearly every issue of the Macon Telegraph newspaper included advertisements for enslaved people: runaways, auctions, and detainees. This exhibition, which was researched and interpreted by Mercer University students, highlights the humanity of the enslaved people who are escaping bondage. In these short newspaper notices, we can see the personalities, ingenuity, skills, and resilience of Macon’s Freedom Seekers.
