New Exhibit That Focuses on Voter Suppression

Opens at the Tubman Museum

 A very special new exhibition opens at the Tubman Museum on Friday, April 19, 2024.  The exhibit is titled Kevin Cole: Where Do We Go from Here? Exploring Gerrymandering and Voting.  It features a selection of mixed media sculptures and works on paper.  In his most recent series of works, the artist Kevin Cole explores the ongoing struggle against disenfranchisement, and for the free and equal participation of African Americans in the divisive arena of contemporary politics.

All Tied Up in Politics

Kevin Cole is an Atlanta-based mixed media artist.  He has been a trailblazing artist, a respected educator, and a fixture on the Atlanta contemporary arts scene for more than four decades.  His connection to the Tubman Museum stretches back to the earliest days for both the artist and the institution.  Cole earned an M.F.A. degree in Painting from Northern Illinois University, and an M.A. degree in Art Education from the University of Illinois.  He maintained a career as an exhibiting artist while teaching art in the City of Atlanta Public Schools for more than 30 years. 

Over the course of his career he has received over 69 awards in art, 28 Art Fellowships and Grants, and 51 Teaching Awards.  In addition to the Tubman Museum, his works are in public collections across the U.S., including the High Museum of Art, the National Museum of African American History (Smithsonian Institution), the Corcoran Gallery Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery among others.  This most recent series of works is supported by the Working Artist Project of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.

The Tubman Museum will host an opening reception for the exhibition on Sunday, April 21 from 3:00 – 5:00 PM.  The artist will be in attendance.  Admission to the special event is Free for Museum Members, $5.00 General Admission.  The exhibition Kevin Cole: Where Do We Go From Here, Exploring Gerrymandering and Voting will remain on exhibit at the Tubman Museum through June 25, 2024.  Contact the Tubman Museum  at 478-743-8544 for more information about this event and other upcoming Museum programs.
