Children ages 7-12 participate in a one-week session of the Tubman Heritage Summer Camps that features arts and crafts activities, character portrayals and creative writing. The children also enjoy a tour of historic Macon sites including famous African American neighborhoods, churches and cemeteries. The highlight of the camp is a trip to Atlanta for a Black Heritage tour of the city. The campers tour the King Center, Herndon Home, and the Sweet Auburn Curb Market as well as the colleges of the Atlanta University System.
All of the Heritage campers walk away from these camps with a good deal of knowledge and a great sense of pride about the heritage of African Americans.
The design of this program is to offer an educational experience for children who wouldn’t naturally have access to art, history and culture over the summer. This Museum program raises funding to cover the cost of “tuition” for the students. Each year, private donors send $150 to sponsor a child for this program. The Tubman Museum is grateful for the many private donors who care about making this experience possible for 112 young people each year.
In an effort to ensure that as many children as possible are exposed to this cultural opportunity, this camp is open to children who have not participated in the past. The camp is offered free of charge.
A Heritage Camp Application Form will be posted here when the Education Department is ready to begin taking Applications. Please check back around the beginning of May 2009.
